Call-outs
What counts as an emergency
- House lockout — door pulled shut with keys on the bench, or a key lost while you were out.
- Car lockout — keys visible on the seat, or locked in the boot.
- Business lockout — shopfront or office you can’t open before trade.
- Key snapped in the lock — broken key extracted and a replacement cut on the spot.
- Lock failed — a cylinder that’s seized or a deadlock that won’t throw.
- After a break-in — making a damaged door secure again, fast.
Before you call anyone — two things worth knowing
If someone is locked in a car, call 000 first. On a warm day a parked car becomes dangerous within minutes, and emergency services will open it straight away at no cost. Never wait for a locksmith in that situation.
Check the obvious exits first. A back door, a laundry window, a housemate or agent with a spare. It costs nothing to check and it has saved plenty of people a call-out fee.
The dodgy-operator problem
Emergency locksmithing attracts a certain kind of operator: a national-sounding phone number, a low quote to secure the booking, then a much larger invoice at the door once you’re standing in the cold. It is a genuinely common scam and Melbourne is not exempt.
Three questions filter it out, whoever you end up ringing: What is the total, including call-out and GST? Are you the person attending? What is your ABN? An operator who won’t answer those on the phone is telling you something.
What happens when we arrive
You get asked for identification and something that links you to the address or vehicle. Then the lock is assessed and you are given the price before any tool is used. Non-destructive methods come first. If the only remaining route damages the lock, that is explained and agreed before it happens — not discovered afterwards.
Tell us on the phone
- House, car or business
- The address or where the car is
- Is anyone inside?
- What type of door or lock
The more specific you are, the more accurate the price and the arrival window.

Questions
Emergency lockout questions
I’m locked out right now. What do I do?
Ring 0468 770 558. Say where you are, whether it’s a house, car or business, and whether anyone is inside — a child or a pet locked in a car changes the priority immediately. Then wait somewhere safe.
Will you damage my door or lock?
Non-destructive entry is the default and it works on the large majority of jobs. Drilling is a last resort for locks that genuinely leave no other route — some high-security cylinders are built precisely to resist picking. If a lock has to be sacrificed, you find out and agree the cost before it happens.
Do you charge more at night?
Yes. After-hours and public holiday call-outs cost more than a weekday morning. The figure gets said on the phone before anyone gets in the van.
A child or pet is locked in the car. What now?
Call 000 first if there is any chance of heat distress — a car interior climbs dangerously fast on a warm Melbourne day, and emergency services will get that door open immediately at no cost. Ring us after, or for the replacement key once everyone is safe.
Can you prove you’re legitimate before I let you in?
You should ask. Great Southern Lock is an ABN-registered business (73 112 836 867) and carries public liability insurance. You’ll also be asked for proof you have a right to the property — ID and something linking you to the address. A locksmith who doesn’t ask is a locksmith to worry about.
Do you do board-ups after a break-in?
We can make a damaged door secure and get a working lock back on it. Ring and describe what was damaged — if it’s a full door or frame replacement, we’ll say so rather than take the job.
